What is Helly Tech®?
Helly Tech® is Helly Hansen’s proprietary weatherproof fabric system. It combines a DWR-treated outer fabric, a waterproof & breathable membrane, and a breathable inner lining or mesh to create a barrier between you and the elements — keeping water out while allowing moisture (sweat) to escape.
How does Helly Tech® keep me dry in rain and snow?
The system works in several layers: Outer fabric with DWR (durable water-repellent) treatment helps water bead off the surface rather than soak in. A waterproof membrane or coating beneath the face fabric blocks water from penetrating inward. The membrane is breathable — it allows vapor from perspiration to exit, keeping the interior comfortable and preventing dampness buildup. Seam taping and well-constructed zippers or closures prevent water ingress through stitching or gaps.
What are the different performance levels of Helly Tech®?
Helly Hansen offers three tiers of Helly Tech® to match different usage and conditions. Helly Tech® Protection - Everyday winter use, commuting, moderate weather. Fully waterproof, windproof, breathable — solid all-around protection Helly Tech® Performance - Active alpine sports, shifting weather. A step up in waterproofing and breathability for more demanding conditions. Helly Tech® Professional - Extreme conditions, prolonged exposure, backcountry. Maximum waterproofing and breathability for high-intensity use.
Can Helly Tech® handle wind as well as water?
Yes — in addition to being waterproof and breathable, Helly Tech® fabrics are windproof, helping block cold gusts and drafts.
How does Helly Tech® compare to other waterproof fabrics (e.g. Gore‑Tex)?
Helly Tech® uses a mix of microporous membranes and hydrophilic membranes, allowing vapor to exit while blocking droplets. Some garments also incorporate Helly Hansen’s newer LIFA INFINITY PRO™ membrane, which offers waterproof/breathable performance without added chemical treatments. What distinguishes Helly Tech® is the balance between waterproof protection, breathability, and comfort, especially in snow and winter use.
What should I look for to make sure a Helly Hansen jacket is truly weatherproof?
Beyond fabric technology, pay attention to: Fully taped seams (to prevent leaks along stitch lines) Waterproof zippers and storm flaps Adjustable hoods, cuffs, and hems that seal out drafts Ventilation zippers / pit vents to help release heat and moisture Quality construction and reinforcement in high-wear zones
Does Helly Tech® require special care or reproofing?
Yes, proper maintenance helps keep the waterproof performance intact: Use a technical wash (gentle, no softeners) to clean the garment Reapply DWR treatment when the outer fabric stops beading water Follow garment care labels (e.g. dry on low, avoid harsh detergents) Note: fabrics using LIFA INFINITY PRO™ are designed to not require chemical reproofing, as they rely on hydrophobic performance built into the fibers themselves.
