Interested in kneeboarding, but need guidance when it comes to picking a design? What’s the difference between kneeboard designs? Overall, kneeboard designs fall into two basic categories: flat-bottomed and curved-bottomed. Whether you are a kneeboarding pro and enjoy the thrill of tricks, or are interested in a fun day of slalom kneeboarding, these two basic designs each work well for different types of kneeboarding. Going further, we can split up kneeboards into these different types.
Recreational
Many recreational kneeboards have wide, soft edges that are great for beginners and recreational riding. The edges offer smooth turns with more control and stability, so you can have a fun day out on the water no matter your level of kneeboarding expertise or experience.
Tricks
Kneeboard designs favored by riders who want to do tricks have thick rails and curved rockers, as well as a rounded edge shape. The curved rockers allow quick and sharp turns. These boards are very durable to hold up during tricks and competitions.
Competitive
Like the boards designed for tricks, competitive boards for advanced kneeboarders also have sharp edges for quick, sharp turns and they are thin and light. Just because they are light though, doesn’t mean they aren’t durable. They are built to withstand high-performance rides and tricks.
Slalom
Kneeboarders who want to do slalom kneeboarding should seek out kneeboard designs with flat rockers, sharper rails, a sharper edge shape, and retractable fins. This board design also offers tight, sharp turns like the trick board designs.
Other Tips
No matter which kneeboard designs you prefer, it’s also important to consider other features of your ride, such as your rope and handle. Be sure to use a kneeboard rope that is at least 45 feet long. A typical kneeboard rope can be up to about 60 to 70 feet in length with little to no stretch in the rope. A quality kneeboard rope handle should have a good, wide grip to help with high-performance and tricks.
Now that you have an understanding of the difference between kneeboard designs, you can go out and choose the one that is right for you.
