The temperatures are dropping, which means now’s the time to start layering for your bike rides! Whether you’re hitting the trails or exploring city paths, layering up in the cold is essential to trap body heat and stay warm in extreme conditions. Don’t know where to begin with layering up for your ride? We’ve got you covered. Here’s a step-by-step process on how to layer for cycling in the cold.
Step 1: Base Layer
A high-quality base layer is important as this is the apparel that is the first point contact with your skin. We recommend a wicking base layer rather than cotton, as the fabric will allow your sweat to evaporate through the other layers. On the other hand, a cotton base layer does not evaporate. In fact, it stays damp when you sweat, which can make you feel colder in chilly winds.
Step 2: Mid-Layer
Your mid-layer, also known as your insulating layer, can vary depending on the extremity of the chill outside. Most common garments for mid-layers include lightweight jerseys, and medium-long sleeve jerseys. A long sleeve jersey is best for colder days, whereas lightweight, breathable mid-layers are best for days with a major temperature swing. We recommend finding a mid-layer made from polyester, nylon, or wool fabrics—as these materials are sweat-wicking and designed to keep you warmer for longer.
Step 3: Outer Layer
Your outer layer is best for protecting you against wind-chill and rain. Whatever type of outer layer you choose needs to be breathable and waterproof, as otherwise you’d melt with sweat. We recommend a lightweight, breathable waterproof jacket to ensure you won’t get too sweaty, and to remain warm and dry in case of extreme elements.
Step 4: Additional Accessories
On those extremely cold days, don’t worry! You can still hit the trails, just don’t forget to accessorize. From helmet liners to gloves and even arm and leg warmers, biking accessories can be vital to trap in your body heat.
