Finding the Perfect Fit

When buying a kids’ bike, the most common mistake is buying a bike that a child can grow into. While it’s tempting, a bicycle that is too large is difficult to control and can quickly zap a child’s confidence. We make the process simple: just bring your child into one of our 30+ locations, and an Outdoor Expert will take it from there.

Stand-Over Height

Your child should be able to stand over the top tube of the bicycle with both feet flat on the ground. For instance, for neighborhood cruising, aim for about 1 to 2 inches of clearance. On the other hand, if your child plans on hitting local mountain trails, a little extra room is better to allow for quick hops off the seat on uneven ground.

The Reach Test

Similarly, your child should be able to reach the handlebars comfortably with a slight bend in the elbows. However, if they are leaning too far forward, they’ll lose steering leverage. In contrast, if they are too upright, they won’t have the proper control for hills. Our Outdoor Experts can help adjust the seat and handlebar height in-store to make the setup easy and comfortable.

Kids’ Bike Size Chart

A kids’ bike size chart can help narrow down the right frame size before visiting a store. These youth bicycles are typically sized by wheel diameter rather than frame size.

This size chart is a helpful starting point, but children grow at different rates. It’s important to note the rider high is the main factor when choosing a bike size, not age. Parents can find 12″ bikes, 16″ bikes, 18″ bikes, and 20″ bikes in-store and online. The best approach when buying a bike is to test ride and confirm that the rider can stand comfortably over the frame and reach the handlebars with ease.

Matching the Ride to the Rider: Style Matters

Not all bikes are built for every path. Identifying where your child will spend most of their time riding will determine which category is best for their next adventure. Fortunately, you can find single-speed bicycles, front-suspension mountain bikes, road-ready youth models, and bikes with removable training wheels in our selection.

No Need for Training Wheels with Balance Bikes

If your child is starting early, skip the training wheels. Specifically, balance bikes focus on the hardest part of riding, balance and steering, without the distraction of pedals. As a result, the transition to a “big-kid” bike is seamless and much faster. Our Outdoor Experts recommend the Haro PreWheelz 12 Balance Bike.

Youth Mountain Bikes

For families that enjoy the woods, dirt paths, or beginner mountain trails, a youth-specific mountain bike is a must. They feature wider tires for better traction and more robust frames designed to handle a few bumps and bruises along the trail. For more rugged terrain, we recommend a kids’ mountain bike with front suspension. Because plenty of beginner trails don’t involve big rocks or drops, most children will be happy on a rigid mountain bike.

Safety Gear: The Non-Negotiables

No bike buying guide would be complete without talking about bike safety. Above all, safety is the foundation of a good time and peace of mind for parents. To support your family, Sun & Ski Sports offers everything you need to keep your rider protected and smiling.

The Perfect Helmet Fit

First and foremost, a bike helmet only works if it stays in place. It should sit level on the head (not tilted back) and cover the forehead. Additionally, the side straps should form a V under the ears, and you should only be able to fit two fingers between the chin strap and the chin. If the helmet wiggles when your child shakes their head, it needs an adjustment.

Visibility and Awareness

As those spring evenings stretch out, being seen is vital, especially for small riders. Equipping the bicycle with accessories like front and rear lights and a bell is a great way to teach road rules and keep them safe in the neighborhood once they are brave enough to leave the driveway.

Built to Last: Technical Specs Parents Should Know

While your child might be focused on the color, the build quality determines how much they’ll actually enjoy the ride. A well-made bike is easier to pedal and holds its value better over time.

Lightweight Materials

Look for aluminum frames whenever possible. Aluminum bikes are significantly lighter than steel frame bicycles, often found in big-box stores. Because a lighter bike is easier for a child to start, stop, and maneuver, which means fewer meltdowns while learning and on uphill climbs. More miles, more smiles, right?

Reliable Braking Systems

Check the brake levers. High-quality kids’ bikes feature levers specifically designed for smaller hands, ensuring your child can reach and pull them with enough force to stop safely. Don’t know how to check a brake level? No worries. Simply bring the bike to our service shop, and one of our professional bike technicians will show you the ropes (and brakes).

Kids’ Bike Trade-Up Program

Families looking to save money on growing riders should take advantage of the Kids Bike Trade-Up Program. Because children outgrow their bikes quickly, this program allows parents to trade in an eligible kid’s bike and receive up to 50% of the original purchase price as store credit toward a larger bike, including adult models.

The program applies to qualifying kids’ bikes with 12–24 inch wheels that were purchased at Sun & Ski Sports within the past two years and are still in good condition. Simply bring proof of purchase, such as a receipt, or email/phone number used at checkout. It’s a smart, affordable option that helps families keep their kids riding the right-size bike.

The Ultimate Checklist for Parents

Before you head out for your first big ride of the season, make sure you’ve checked these boxes:

  • Proper Sizing: Can they stand over the frame and reach the brakes easily?
  • Terrain Match: Does the bike style fit where you actually plan to ride?
  • Weight Check: Is the bike light enough for them to handle independently?
  • Helmet Safety: Is it certified, properly fitted, and level on the head?
  • Visibility: Are front/rear lights and reflectors installed to support bike safety?
  • Hydration: Is there a water bottle cage or a small hydration pack ready?
