When Is It Time to Upgrade Your Snowboard Boots?

As with any other type of shoe, eventually the time comes that you need to purchase a new pair of snowboard boots. Over-wearing old boots can lead to fatigue and pain, as well as potential injury. So, when exactly is that time? In general, snowboard boots are built to last for a couple seasons, but there are a whole host of specific things that can determine when an upgrade is warranted. These range from obvious signals like physical damage to the boots to more personal factors like the evolution of your riding style. Either way, upgrading your snowboard boots is a natural part of the snowboarding journey, and it’s also incredibly important for your safety while on the slopes. Here are some of the most common indicators that it’s time to upgrade your snowboard boots.

1. The Fit Has Changed

If you notice your feet start fitting differently in your boots, then that’s a clear sign it’s time to get new snowboard boots. Whether you find yourself having to tie your laces tighter than ever before, or your heels lift and don’t sit quite as snug, it likely means your liners are packed out. Packed out liners have lost their original shape and cushioning through compression, and are now flatter, and therefore less supportive. This affects your ability to maneuver the board (especially when turning), as your feet will slide around in the boots. Packed out liners can also lead to numb feet both from overcompensating tightness in other areas of the boots, and from a loss of insulation.

2. You Notice a Loss of Support

Piggybacking off our last point around support, if you begin noticing your snowboard has lost its snap and is feeling sluggish, your boots are a likely culprit. Another area loss of support will show up is through impact from jumps or rails. If you find your feet and body hurting more than they used to when doing these tricks, it’s probably time to get a new pair of boots.

3. The Outer Shell Is Damaged

This one is pretty straightforward: If your snowboard boots are physically falling apart, it’s time to upgrade. Look out for cracks in the soles and frayed laces. Another indicator is if your toes get wet, as that means water is getting in and the closures are breaking down. No one wants that!

4. Your Riding Has Progressed

If you’ve leveled up with your riding, then it’s likely your gear has to follow suit. Depending on where you’re at in your snowboarding journey and what type of riding you prefer, a snowboard boot upgrade may be needed. For example, if you’re wanting a surfier feel, to tweak grabs, and style out boardslides, a softer boot is the way to go. On the flip side, if you feel like you’re sliding around in your boots as you carve down the mountain or land a jump, stiffer boots are the upgrade you need.

5. You’ve Exceeded the 60-Day Mark of Use

Age and use are naturally one of the biggest indicators that it’s time to upgrade your boots. The general rule of thumb is that it’s time for new snowboard boots after 60 to 100 days of riding. Depending how you ride and how much wear and tear they receive will determine where you fall on the scale. Casual riders can push it to 100 days or even more, whereas heavy riders will land closer to the 60 day mark.
