Burton’s reintroduction of Step On snowboard bindings sent waves through the industry when they premiered in 2017. The new generation of Step Ons launched a backside 180 way over the bar set by previous strapless bindings, thanks to a half-decade of R&D and tons of rider testing. They’re super convenient, amazingly responsive, and easy for almost anyone to use.
The latest updates to the Burton Step On series for the 24/25 season deliver some exciting upgrades in comfort and ride feel, due to the addition of their EST binding technology.
Burton Step On EST Overview
Previously available only on a super-duper-limited-edition set made for Jake Burton Carpenter himself, EST tech is now available on the Genesis Step On EST, Burton’s flagship model in the Step On series.
Bringing EST to the Step On lineup combines convenience and ease of use with incredible comfort, ride feel, and unlimited adjustability. While EST technology has been around for nearly 15 years now, successfully engineering the same benefits for the Step On series is a major accomplishment.
Because they mount to your board on the sides of your bindings instead of beneath your feet, EST bindings can use flexible cushioning in the footbed, instead of a rigid mounting disc. As a result, your board flexes more naturally underfoot, without a “dead spot” beneath your binding.
Besides improved board flex, you also get more cushioning beneath your feet, and smoother, more natural weight shifts from tip to tail. And because EST bindings pair with Burton’s Channel mounting system, you also get unlimited stance options instead of having to choose from a few preset positions.
Will Burton Step On EST Bindings Work With Any Step On Boots?
Yes! Even if you’ve still got Burton Step On boots from previous years, they’ll still work with the new Step On EST platform. Burton’s cleat system is exactly the same, even though the EST bindings look a bit different.

Compared to Burton’s original Genesis Step On with Flex mounting, the Step On EST version is noticeably lighter. From carrying your board on side-country hikes to slow chairlift rides that test your ankle stamina, you’re extremely likely to notice the difference from the lightweight design.
How It Rides
The Burton Genesis Step On EST offers a mid-flexing feel that’s ideal for all-mountain riding. You get plenty of response for reliable edge hold at top speed, with more than enough comfort and flex to play around in the park or session a side hit.
Who It’s For?
Burton’s Step On EST bindings are a solid choice for anyone who wants the ultimate combination of comfort, convenience, ride feel, response, and adjustability. They’re definitely a high-end piece of gear, but still very accessible for different ability levels and riding styles.
Shop All Snowboard GearAre Burton Step Ons Right for Beginners?
Definitely! Strapping in (and standing up afterwards) is one of the toughest parts of snowboarding for many new riders. Step On allows you to click in and ride away in seconds, and get out of your bindings at the bottom of a run with the quick pull of one lever. Step On bindings are a great choice for beginners, as well as instructors, parents, or anyone else who wants the option to get in and out of their bindings quickly and easily.
You’ll need to get used to the correct foot position for clicking in to your Step On bindings, but a few minutes of practice on your living room carpet should help you get the hang of it quickly. (Just try to resist the urge to boardslide your coffee table—it rarely ends well.)
The Final Word
Burton’s Step On system is here to stay—the lineup continues to see new upgrades every year. We’re even starting to see other manufacturers adopt Step On technology for their own products, which should lead to more cross-brand compatibility options down the road.
From experienced Step On riders to considering your first dip into the world of strapless bindings, the 24/25 Burton Step On series is the most advanced yet, and well worth a serious look for anyone who wants a more convenient way to get in and out of their board.
