As we get into the dog days of summer, we often look to cool off by having a day on the beach or lake. Imagine the sun beating down on you with the heat radiating from the sidewalk. Then imagine being instantly cooled off with a jump into the cool waters of the local swimming hole. Or get your heart racing as you jump wakes as you are pulled behind a boat n a wakeboard. Some might say that is what summer is all about! If you are new to Houston, or simply up to trying something new, where would you go to have these experiences? At Sun & Ski Sports, we’re all about having the best adventures. So let’s dive into 3 places to go for watersports in Houston.
Galveston Island
First, let us go to the ocean to catch some rays. Situated around 50 miles from the center of Houston, Galveston has plenty of beaches to explore and plenty of open water to play in. Head further south on the island for a less crowded beach experience during peak season. You’ll also pass up Galveston Island State Park. There, you can drop in a kayak or paddleboard and paddle the Galveston Island State Park Paddling Trail. You’ll be able to see a bunch of birds, fish, and other wildlife. For the more adventurous, launch your boat at the Lee and Joe Jamail Bay Park for some water skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing fun. Wind down with food and shopping on the Galveston Seawall and the historic Strand. You can easily make this adventure a multi-day excursion if you are not careful!
Clear Lake- Clear Lake Park
Not as far as Galveston, Clear Lake is around 30 miles from Houston. This lake is connected to Galveston Bay via the Kemah Channel. Clear Lake is an ideal place to water ski, wakeboard, go tubing, and more. The lake has open spaces that span for miles. You can launch the boat at Clear Lake Park, which has plenty of amenities including a fishing pier, playground, jogging trail, and sports fields. The park also sports a kayak and paddleboard launch on the Northern side that leads up to the Armand Bayou Nature Center.
Lake Conroe
Just North of Houston is the small town of Conroe which sits off a lake. If you’re not wanting to drive down to the coast or Clear Lake, Lake Conroe is one of the closer options for watersports in Houston. This lake is perfect for relaxing on the water, if you seek the thrills from water skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing, or both! Relax by the lake at Lake Conroe Park where you can swim and fish. Or take the boat out and get the adrenaline pumping. Don’t have a boat? Lake Conroe has plenty of places that rent out boats or jet skis. Want a little getaway? Get the boat and spend some time at Ayers Island, a small island in the middle of the lake with a small beach. Just watch for crowds during peak season.
