There’s nothing worse than having wet or cold feet on a winter day on account of wearing inappropriate boots for the weather. Whether stepping through puddles as you cross the street or climbing over snow banks to reach your car as you head out for your morning commute, a good pair of winter boots will make these everyday tasks that much more comfortable to do during the winter season.

So, here we’re talking about some of our favorite winter boots for men, women, and children, courtesy of brands like The North Face, Sorel, and Kamik. Throw these on for anything from running errands to playing outside with your kids, and you’ll be warm and comfortable (and, of course, fashionable too).

What to Look for with Winter Boots

From warm and insulation to boot height and style, there are some key features to look out for when shopping for winter boots:

  • Waterproofing: Though you may not be wearing these boots for big outdoor adventures like hikes, winter boots should be waterproof, or at least water-resistent, to protect you from the elements. Look for waterproof uppers, sealed seams, and waterproof membranes. If the boots are just water-resistant, they’ll have less protection than ones that are fully waterproof, but depending on the weather where you live, that could be sufficient.

  • Insulation: Insulation is what keeps your feet warm. Many boots specify their level of insulation in grams, with higher numbers meaning more insulation.

  • Outsole traction: Even if you’re not wearing your winter boots for strenuous activities, you still need good traction and grip so you can safely walk across ice, slush, and packed snow. Look for rubber outsoles with deep lugs, and soles built for cold, since regular rubber gets hard and slick when the temperature drops.

  • Boot height: Of course, the higher the boot, the more protection you have. We love styles that are at least mid-rise to give you some ankle protection and make it less likely for snow or rain to find its way in.

  • Style: Even if you’re not a fashionista, you should love the way you look in your winter boots. Maybe you prefer a certain colorway or love a little fur detail. Either way, don’t let the practicality of a winter boot keep you from finding a style that suits you.

Winter Boots for Snow and Ice FAQs

What Are the Best Boots for Snow and Ice?

You want three things here: waterproofing, insulation, and a grippy rubber outsole with deep lugs. Some soles are made specifically for cold weather. They stay softer when it’s freezing out, so they hold onto slick ground better. That’s why we like The North Face Chilkat V 400 and the Kamik Nation Plus for icy commutes. On pure glare ice, though, nothing beats a pair of slip-on traction cleats.

What Are the Warmest Winter Boots?

Start with the insulation, which is usually listed in grams. Higher numbers mean more warmth. Many boots also come with a temperature rating. On this list, the Kamik Nation Plus and the Kamik Momentum L 2 are both rated all the way down to -40°F!

Should You Buy Winter Boots a Size Bigger?

Not necessarily. Try them on with your thickest winter socks. Then size up a half size only if your toes are touching the front. You want a little wiggle room for warm air to move around, but your heel shouldn’t be slipping when you walk.

Are Rain Boots Good for Snow?

Rain boots can handle a slushy crosswalk just fine. Where they fall short is warmth, since most aren’t insulated, and their soles tend to get slippery on ice. If it’s cold and icy where you live, go with a true winter boot.

Winter Boots for the Entire Family

Everyone needs a good, reliable pair of winter boots that they can throw on for anything from going to the store to shoveling the driveway to participating in an epic neighborhood snowball fight with your kids. Waterproofing and insulation are key players to look out for, because that’s what’ll keep your feet warm and dry. But comfort extends beyond just that, as you also want your winter boots to be cushioned, lined, and lightweight. Lastly, let’s not forget style. Just because they’re practical boots, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look and feel good when wearing them.
