You’ve decided to head out on a winter adventure to one of the many mountain resorts around the world. While everyone’s first thoughts are of shredding powdery snow on the mountain, what if you’re not up to it? What other activities besides skiing and snowboarding are there? Whether you need a break from the slopes or are just not into skiing or snowboarding, here are 5 other activities besides skiing and snowboarding at mountain resorts.
Go Hiking or Snowshoeing
You have to admit the pristine snow-covered trees that surround the mountainside are a sight to behold. If you want to experience the beauty up close, go on a hike or head out and snowshoe. Many resorts offer guided tours, but with enough preparation, you can head out on your own! If the area you want to explore is snowed in, get a pair of snowshoes to help navigate the terrain. To help you prepare, read our article on how to get ready for a winter hiking trip.
Snowmobile Tours
Another activity besides skiing and snowboarding is just as exhilarating. You’ll be able to enjoy the sights and while adding an exciting adrenaline twist to the mix. See the sights on a snowmobile. These vehicles are designed for snowy and wintery conditions. Rush through open fields to faraway hills, explore trails, or make your own as you explore the snowy landscape. Again, many resorts have snowmobile tours and rentals or know how to get one. As with any motorized outdoor activity, it is best to be safe and to build experience before exploring on your own. Also, be sure to layer correctly for the elements!
Sledding/ Tubing
A favorite pastime for those living in the hilly and snowy areas, sledding or tubing is an experience of its own. Imagine climbing up a tall hill and enjoying the pristine snow and sights around you. You get set in your sled, maybe with a partner, and you rush down the hill. With the wind rushing past you, the experience is much like skiing or snowboarding but without the learning curve. Most resorts will have sleds for rent. Some even have an entire section of the mountain dedicated to sledding and tubing.
Spas
Maybe you are not into the outdoors and the purpose of this trip is to relax. Well, this activity is for you! Experience a spa day like no other while on the mountain! Depending on your location, some mountain resorts have access to hot springs and other unique amenities. But no matter where you go, you are sure to find some great spa opportunities. Schedule a massage, facial, or other treatments. Afterward, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate while looking out at the snow. You deserve it.
Ice Skating
Let’s head back outside for another winter pastime. When the ponds and lakes freeze over, many locals bring out their ice skates to scoot around the ice. From gliding around to a double axel jump, if the ice is a canvas, then the skates are your brushes. This is a perfect activity to enjoy with the family, falls and all. As always, call ahead to find the optimal times and for reservations.
