There are two common techniques for deep water starts on slalom skis: one-foot starts and two-foot starts. The two-foot start is the start of choice for experienced water skiers, because you can use the pressure from both feet to keep the slalom ski straight.

For a two-foot deep water start on slalom water skis, follow these steps:

  1. Place both feet in the water ski bindings, even if the rear binding is only a simple strap.
  2. Flex your knees, and pull them to your chest, and be sure to keep your ankles flexed as well.
  3. Hold your water ski rope along the instep of your front foot. For example, if your right foot is in front, the rope should be to the left of the slalom ski.
  4. Point your slalom ski tip toward your tow boat, with about 12 inches of ski tip out of the water. The slalom ski should be at a 45-degree angle to the boat.
  5. As your boat starts to move, straighten your arms, tuck your chin to your chest, and stand up slowly, allowing the boat to do the work.
  6. Lean back slightly, look straight ahead, and keep your arms straight as you increase speed.
