If you want to get into running, but are intimidated by all the running shoe options out there, don’t be! The best running shoes for beginners actually aren't anything super niche, but rather shoes that deliver on some of the most-desired basics, such as comfort and stability. In fact, you actually want to avoid anything too extreme in any direction, which means you have plenty of options when shopping for running shoes

As a new runner, you want to make sure you feel comfortable and confident as you take on your new hobby, and these shoes from brands like ASICS, HOKA, Brooks, Saucony, and On provide just that. All these running shoes fall within the optimal heel-to-toe drop range, have the cushioning you’re looking for, and the proper stability to safely guide you through your runs. Plus, they’re also simply great everyday athletic shoes, because there’s no shame in going for a nice long walk as well.

What Makes a Running Shoe Good for Beginners?

A good beginner running shoe is one that provides comfort and stability, but that also doesn’t fall into the extreme end of the spectrum of any specific running shoe feature. Let’s take stability, for example: A beginner running shoe absolutely needs stability, but it shouldn’t necessarily be a stability-focused running shoe, which is one designed to prevent specific form issues like overpronation. A running shoe well-suited for beginners should be overall neutral or moderate in its features, so that it’s forgiving, without overcorrecting or attempting to fix anything.

Here are the key things to look out for when shopping for a beginner running shoe:

Comfort

This is probably of top importance, as comfort allows new runners some leeway in getting used to the foot-pounding activity. To put it simply, you want your running shoe to feel good right off the bat. Try on a few different pairs and see what feels right for you. If the running shoes don’t feel comfortable, they should be skipped.

Neutral vs Stability Running Shoes:

Look for neutral to moderate stability that ensures you have a secure ride, but, as we touched on above, isn’t a full-on stability shoe. You want the shoe to feel predictable, but still with a little forgiveness.

Moderate Cushioning

This specification may vary from person to person, with each runner having their own preference on cushioning based on their unique body, form, and any pain points. But, overall, moderate cushioning is the way to go. Aim for a plush, foam midsole that’s still resilient and responsive.

A decent heel-to-toe drop

Again, this one can boil down to personal preference, but a good rule of thumb is to look for a running shoe with a heel-to-toe drop (the height difference between the heel and toe area of the shoe) in the 5mm to 10mm range for a natural feel. Some may want to go a bit higher, which is okay for those who need extra cushioning on the heel, but you really shouldn’t go too much lower (no zero drop shoes!).

How Should Running Shoes Fit?:

Of course, you want your running shoe to fit well, but what exactly does that mean? Your foot, and specifically your heel, should not move around inside the shoe, but it also shouldn’t be so snug that it feels constricted.

HOKA Bondi 9 Running Shoe

The HOKA Bondi 9 Running Shoe is on the more cushioned side of the spectrum, but it’s still a great running shoe for beginners. It’s extremely comfortable, with a foam EVA midsole and HOKA’s signature MetaRocker design for a smooth, easy ride. It has a 5mm heel-to-toe drop and a rearfoot-focused Active Foot Frame to keep your feet secure. On Cloudrunner 3 Running Shoe

You’ll get a little more stability with the On Cloudrunner 3 Running Shoe, but not so much that it’s not appropriate for beginners. It has moderate cushioning for balanced support and a Helium foam midsole for responsive comfort.
