Your feet are already outfitted with complex landing gear. The Five-Fingers allow you to build and strengthen that gear, and reinforce more bio-mechanically correct form. The soles are extremely thin, and there is no padding.

I recently started training for a marathon. I haven't been a runner, so I started unable to run a mile. I gradually increased my distance until suffering knee pains. I was told that I had IT band syndrome and runner's knee. The recommendations were stretching and orthotics. I bought 3 types of sneakers and insoles with arch support. They were of no help at all. A friend recommended I run barefoot. I read a book about it. I tried it, and it worked. No knee pains! The Vibram FiveFingers allow me to continue running 'barefoot' without having to worry about stepping on glass, etc. I can continue running thanks to these shoes!

I've only run on pavement so far but I love them. the first run was only about 1 mile but my calves were sore for a week. It's been 3 weeks of running in them and my run is faster and my calves have gained noticable definition

I wear them to the gym. I wear them running on and off road. Well, basicly, I just wear them all the time.

I use this for GS kettlebell, running and Cross Fit type workouts. I'm concerned because i have gone w/o socks in the past. I am curious how the shoe holds up to going w/o socks (smell wise)
Feels good doing deadlifts in too!

I use them for everyday getting about and running. they take a bit to get used to (especially running) but feel great after a short time.
I don't know how long they will last because they have such a thin sole but they seeming to be wearing nicely so far.
Definitely comfortable
Not so good on sharp gravel.

If you're into barefoot running these will protect your soles. I've run in these twice. Truth be told my shoe-spoiled feet need some callousing before I'm completely comfortable in these. Also, my midfoot plant needs work, and my lower legs need strengthening.
And be clear: the point of these is NOT to give cushion and protection, but to allow the feel of bare feet. The sensory information you get from the ground is really amazing.
Today my calves are sore, but I'm going to keep at it.

This seriously handles everything I throw at it. From running to lifting weights or just hanging out, the shoe is comfortable, breathable, and feels great on the feet.
I say poor cushioning only because you have to be conscientious about where you step, or else that lone sharp rock might make you a little uncomfortable.
Beyond anything else, the shoes look great. Almost everyone you see will be asking about your cool shoes!

I was plauged with foot injuries over the years and decided to try barefoot activities to build more strength in my feet. I have had the VFFs for two weeks now and LOVE them. I bought them mostly for running, but I also started using that the gym for weight lifting, cardio classes, etc--everything except cycling! I have used them on several outdoor runs, ramping up my milage slowly as my feet get stronger.
When you read up online about 'going barefoot' there's lots of talk about how fun it is. After a couple weeks using the VFFs, I get it now. Even just running errands or around the house, given a choice, I wear my VFFs. Sometimes I get a strange look or questions, but I don't mind.
For drawbacks, there isn't much to say. They fit closely on the foot so a bit of work to get on. But about the same amount of time it takes to put on shoes, socks and tie laces.
For care, I throw them in the washer once a week, or more if they start to smell. That usually isn't a problem unless I put them on after wearing regular shoes all day.
Follow Vibram's recommendations on measuring your feet instead of relying on your normal shoe size. I had my doubts on the size recommended but it worked out just right.

I am currently an active duty marine stationed in japan so i use the shoes almost daily for pt which is everything from running and conditioning courses, to team sports and swimming. I also do a lot of exploring and mountain climbing out here and the shoes are perfect for both! They have an amazing grip and are the closest thing you can get to being barefoot with protection from rocks and such. I will be buying the FiveFingers Classics soon and I definitely recommend these shoes to anyone that enjoys the outdoors!
