After nearly a decade of recreational cycling I have come to the conclusion that cheap shorts are not worth it.
I started of with $30-40 shorts from Pearl Izumi, Cannondale, Canari (Supergo) and some no-name brands. Then I progressed to $60-70 shorts from Sugoi. Finally I tried Giordana Tenax and found true comfort. I also have a really nice pair of Hincapie Sports shorts that I got on sale, presumably because of their ugly graphics.
When I tried the cheaper Sugoi shorts, I found their chamois comfort and durability lacking, and their sizing on the small size. This year, I ordered a pair of Sugoi Rs Mens Cycling Shorts at the same time as a pair of '08 Voler Elite DX shorts for the same price. Although the stitching quality and fabric looks similar, I have been more comfortable with the Sugoi's.
The Sugoi chamois padding is quite thick, although it is well-contoured. In the past, I have preferred a little less chamois padding, such as on the Giordana's and Hincapie's. My weakness is chafing where my butt encounters the edge of the chamois. On some shorts (low-end Pearl Izumi being the worst ever) the abrasion on the saddle causes a painful welt after 60 miles or so. I rode 110 miles last Saturday with the Sugoi's and had a pain free shower afterward. There is no higher recommendation that I can give.
Durability remains to be seen, but I have no reason to think it will be any worse than other brands at the same price point.
These are my favorite shorts. Extremely breathable and dry. Outperformed my other brands. Great for regular weekend use and performed awesome on my first century, 50 miles without discomfort and another 51 after lunch.
