What are some advantages of a dome tent?

Tent architecture is relatively limited. Most tents, whether they are family tents, backpacking tents, or extreme weather tents, fall in tow basic categories. Consider your camping plans, and check out different tent styles to find the one that meets your needs.

  • Non-freestanding tents: These tents are defined as requiring stakes to stay erect. These can include tunnel, hoop, bivies or even hammock tents. They are the lightest weight options, but are often the smallest and the weakest option. They can be great if you want a small, lightweight tent, that you won't be spending much time in.
  • Freestanding tents: The greatest majority of tents are going to be freestanding dome tents like the Marmot Twighlight 2 person tent. They are stronger and bigger, but are also heavier than their non-freestanding counterparts.

No matter what type of tent you choose, consider factors such as ventilation in a lightweight tent for summer, and a tent that can be sealed well against cold for winter camping.
